  1. Ciao classe,
After viewing theses emails my jaw actually dropped. The last email especially took me by complete surprise and I could not believe someone actually wrote that. I believe the requirements were rather simple and understandable.

I believe this is a requirement for a few reasons. The first one being this is an online class so the interactions should be just as professional as a when speaking in person to a professor. The second reason being for post graduation or the "real world" if you can't communicate properly with your professor via email in a professional manner how will you communicate with your boss?

  2. The requirement for the email to be the exact match for a student’s name is understandable. I presume it was to make it a simple process for the professor to identify emails from any given student without the need to decipher said students email or the need to cross reference. The email etiquette is clearly a simply set of guidelines to ensure all communication is above all professional and clearly conveys the message for which it was intended as a preparation for sending messages in a real world environment when the stakes are far greater than a simple grade.

  3. My initial reaction after reading the email exchange was confusion. I didn't understand why Jane Doe was so angry over something so easily remedied. I understand the reason for this requirement to be one of assistance. Requiring all students to have a mandatory professional email will assist students with their transition into academic and professional communication.

  4. After reading these responses I was a bit shocked by the reaponses by the professor and also a bit upset on the student's behalf. Then after reading more into the situation and wondering why the full name is required as a email address, I understood why the professor wanted it to be done. With the full name as the email address it's easier for the professor to keep track of his records.

  5. As many of you expressed, I too was surprised at the students' and professor's responses within these email exchanges. Although the requirement of a full-name email may seem tedious to some students since it may require the need to create an entirely new account for one course, it should be done with no complaints since it is, as stated, a requirement for the course. Students should understand that it benefits both parties to meet this requirement, since its goal is to create more clear communication between each. However, both parties should maintain proper communication etiquette, regardless of content, since both are part of professional communities that require such in order to effectively communicate and fulfill personal goals simultaneously.

  6. My initial reaction was also one of confusion and shock because, coming from a customer service background in tech, I am not used to terse responses, especially when I feel students may be earnestly trying to understand the requirements. I was saddened by what I felt was a lack of respect that seemed to be coming from both sides.

I understand that this requirement is something that aids the professor and is carefully spelled out. I also get that students have a certain responsibility to read carefully and shouldn't expect hand-holding when dealing with class requirements. I am curious, however, why Blackboard can't be utilized for turning in assignments. I think proper e-mail etiquette is something that all students should adhere to, especially if it is heavily utilized in an online class.

  7. I was initially surprised by the lack of etiquette in this exchange, and it's unfortunate that it led a student to drop the class. I do understand that the email requirement is helpful for a fully online class, since it allows the professor to identify and distinguish students more easily. And even if the requested email has already been taken by another user, you can simply add a number to the end. (As I did.) Having said that, I believe it's important for both parties to be patient and understanding of one another in such an exchange. This is especially important when communicating online, since emotional intent can sometimes be lost in a text-based conversation. The student's first email was respectfully written, but she seemed to grow frustrated with the professor's responses. Still, her sarcastic reply at the end was something of an overreaction. In any case, it's a shame that both parties couldn't have worked to remedy the situation more smoothly.

  8. I will skip question number one.
I believe the reason for this requirement is to teach students professional and proper business etiquettes via email.

  9. As many of you said it, I was shocked by these email exchanges. But I also understand why the professor is stressing on this email requirement. Since it is an online class, I believe this requirement is an easier way to identify the students. If a requirement is not taking away my rights as a student, then it is just "A Requirement."

  10. My immediate reaction to the email exchange is shock. I think that the exchange is unprofessional.
I understand that the reason for this email requirement is for the professor to more easily identify the student, considering it is an online class. I also feel it is much more professional not only in school but outside as well. Having your full name as your email, even if it has some numbers at the end, allows the receiver of your message to know right away who you are. Students should be able to comply with the requirements of the course.

  11. My immediate reaction to the email exchange is confusion mixed with shock. I feel that there wasn't much respect coming from both sides. I also feel like there were different ways in which both parties could have responded in order to have had successful exchange.

However, I do understand why this is something that is required. It is a way to help both the professor and the student.

  12. At first I was confused by the email. It started out so polite. I feel like the email exchange could have been handeled differently and feelings wouldn't have been hurt.
I understand the full name is desired when emailing so that one knows exactly who they are talking to. In this case it seems like the student tried but google wouldn't allow it. Following the reequirrements of a class is important. It helps build business ethic and the ability to follow instructions. That is why complying with the email protocal is understandable.

  13. My initial reaction when reading the emails was astonishment. I believe that there are better ways to communicate. Acting professionally, and respect in every situation is very important. This directs in a much more positive way any kind of conversation. And I believe that following the requirements of a classe is important for Professors, especially in an online.

  14. I believe that the requirement of a full name email address is necessary in order to have better conversations with the professor. Since it is online class it must be treated just as professional as a regular in person course. I also believe that this requirement is preparing us for proper email communication in the future.

  15. After reading the encounter between Jane Doe and the professor I was very shocked. I did not think that this was a complicated requirement or did it deserve to be dwelled upon. I understand that this requirement is what makes an online class possible. Since the professor is not able to see us face to face, knowing our full names offers much help.
