  1. English is my second language and I think learning a new language gave me a new personality. Speaking a foreign language gives me a new perspective and allows me to see the world from another point of view. By learning Italian I am not only hoping to learn a new language but I also hope to learn a new culture. I would love to visit Italy in the future and discover a new country for myself as well as to learn the Italian lifestyle. They say Italian is a romance language and I have a very romantic personality. And also learning a new language, in my case it is Italian, is another healthy and useful way to increase my brain power.

  2. Studying Italian is a subject that interests me because I enjoy learning about other cultures and languages. I enjoy traveling and meeting people from other countries. This past winter I went on a trip to Europe and vistied Italy. I went to Milan and to Venice and I was awed by the beauty of the country and the fascinating people. That is why I wanted to take Italian 1010.

  3. I love popular culture, and enjoy books/films/TV that entertain and engage me. However, most of the culture I consume is in English. I find that most of the international culture that interests me comes from Europe - particularly France and Italy. However, I've had to settle for English translations, since I don't know the other languages.

I'd like to explore these cultures further, but it would naturally help to have a good grasp of the language. So I'm hoping that ITAL 1010 will be my first stepping stone to understanding the Italian language - and by extension, to becoming more familiar with the nuances of Italian culture.

  4. I work in the service industry and I enjoy meeting new people with different backgrounds. I've always been interested in Italian culture because I'm obsessed with Italian cuisine. Since I've moved from California to NY i've never interacted with so many Italians and I enjoy every moment of it. I enjoy good food, amazing art, and I love to travel. My goal is to one day travel to Italy. Hopefully, taking this course can teach me basic Italian that I can use in the future.

  5. I am currently a TESOL Major so knowing other languages is extremely beneficial for my profession. If a student entered my classroom and Italian was their first language it will make teaching them English easier. Also, this summer I will also be traveling to Italy for the month of August and I felt taking this course would help me so much. Lastly, I speak Spanish almost fluent so I am excited to learn another language and be exposed to a new culture!

  6. Studying Italian is something that interests me because I always wanted to travel to Italy ever since I was a little kid.I wanted to get to experience what it was like there but I have not gotten to yet so I decided if I couldn't travel to Italy yet than maybe it would be beneficial for me to learn Italian.I though if I would learn Italian at least I would understand and be able to speak Italian instead of not knowing or understanding any Italian at all.

As a Vocal Performance Major at the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music, I am exposed to a lot of music written in Italian. Therefore, It is extremely important that I develop the ability to speak Italian properly. In addition, studying Italian will help me get a better understanding of the pieces that I sing. I truly believe that this course will make me a better musician and hopefully give me a better understanding of Italian culture.

Being able to learn different languages has always excited me. I love to be exposed to different languages and cultures. I work in a school where half of my students are Italian and although most of the children are fluent in English, their parents are not as fluent. I believe being able to constantly communicate with parents properly regarding their children plays and important role in the child's education. I took this course as the stepping stone for me to be able to build better relationships with my Italian families.

Being a bilingual speaker myself of Greek and English, I have always considered language to be a great deal of my being and personality. I believe the ability to speak different languages directly shapes one's thoughts, beliefs and actions at the micro and macro levels of being. However more so, having recently graduated with a master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, (TESOL) I was able to deeply study and engage with all aspects of the language learning process that enabled me to develop a great deal of interest in learning more languages. Specifically, I was able to gain such a deep understanding of the language acquisition process within speakers of various languages and believe to truly empathize with their experiences. Therefore, I believe learning Italian, even through a digital lens, will help me build stronger connections with others yet most importantly my students. I have studied Spanish for many years in the past, so my choice to study Italian stems from attempting to broaden my linguistic understandings and skills.

  10. Studying the Italian language interests me a great deal because I have always loved learning new things. This past spring semester I studied Spanish and I fell in love with the beautiful language. I have been told that Italian and Spanish are very similar so I would love to give it shot and I hope to fall in love with this language as well. I aspire to become a lawyer in the near future, and I can understand that speaking multiple languages will play to my advantage in that field.

  11. I am one of three children to my parents who are both bilingual. My mother was born in Puerto Rico and my father was born in Dominican Republic. Spanish was both of their first language. Growing up, my parents only spoke in Spanish to my oldest brother. Once in the school system, he had to go through ESL in order to learn English and keep up with the pace of the curriculum. My mom did not want my second oldest brother and me to have to go through that so she started speaking to us only in English. Now grown up, my second oldest and me don’t really speak Spanish. My father now speaks very broken English so we understand almost everything in Spanish but we aren’t confident enough to speak the language fluently. I have been spending some weeks in Puerto Rico every summer with my Grandpa who still lives in Toa Alta to try and become more fluent in Spanish. I’ve been having so much fun learning and practicing to be being able to communicate in two languages. I figured why not try to pick up a third! In the world today, and especially in New York, speaking more than one language is so common because of the diversity that we are lucky to have. It is also such an advantage when job searching. If I could accomplish being trilingual, that would be amazing. I am excited to learn!

  12. As a student of history, I have always been fascinated by the Medici family and am particularly interested in the Renaissance. I was fortunate to be able to visit Florence, Venice, and Rome two years ago during a European trip but felt I was at a disadvantage not knowing how to speak Italian. Although I understand and speak Spanish, it was not as easy understanding Italian as I thought it would be. I am looking forward to getting a basic knowledge of Italian and hopefully be able to utilize it when I return to Italy!

I took interest in studying Italian because not only do I like to try new things but, I enjoy hearing other people speak different languages.I only speak english which is why I try to dabble in language courses just so that I can be able to communicate with people who do not speak the same language as me. I took Spanish at my previous college and I loved it; it has been extremely helpful because it makes me feel good to know that I can help out a little; by translating for someone. Furthermore, my dream is to travel the world and I would like to be able to communicate with the natives and get the full experience of the trip. Corniglia, Italy is where I want to go for my birthday this year and taking this course will prepare me for my trip.

  14. I have always liked learning new languages. English is my second language, and would like to learn and speak a third language fluently. I've been to Italy once, and I would like to go back to visit other places, so I would like to learn more of the language, so I can communicate and take the time to improve my language skills. I also appreciate Italian songs, I listen to Italian songs regularly and I think it is also a great tool to learn a new language. So I'm very much excited to take this class because I believe I'll get to learn a lot of Italian before my next visit to the country.

  15. I come from a culture had has many different languages. Speaking multiple languages is something that sets you above all the other people you live or grew up with .Speaking different languages can make the differences when you are competing for job and gives you a big adavatage in life. I just imagine how cool it would be for an african to speak Italian . I don't know where it might take me, but I am excited to not just learn another language , but just learn about another culture.

  16. I'm always asked if I'm Italian because of my last name, Viteri, and thoughmy father in fact and Ecudorian Italian it seems that I have not excuse for the next few questions I have to answer. Do I know Italian, why dont I know Italian, do I want to embrace my Italian side? I hate that I always have to explain myself as to why I don't know Italian as of yet, and it wouldn't hurt to know a third language, so I decided now that I have the freedom to pick my electives I will do something for me. I will learn Italian. This language has everything to do with me and my personality as I feel it is important to connect to all my roots to get a better understanding of myself, my attitudes, my likes and dislikes and knowing the language will help me interact and learn more things both about the world and me. So here I am learning Italian!

  17. With English being my native language, learning the Italian language interest me because of the passion behind the worlds being spoken. Even though some languages are similar, the Italian language has more passion. Also, with my travels, and field of work, building multicultural relationships will help me better my communication skills, and enhance my perspective on cultures outside of my own.

  18. I have always considered Italian to be a very beautiful language and I first came across the language mainly from movies both old and new. I personally speak a few languages and learning other languages has always been a desire of mine, however due to time and life constraints I have been limited to the 3 I speak personally which are English, Bangla and Hindi, all 3 of which I am fluent in. Italy is a place my wife has also expressed the desire to visit (repeatedly) so learning Italian would be practical for me since I will most probably end up there sooner or later.

  19. I chose to study Italian because I see it as being a unique language which is how I consider myself.Italian was one of the first languages I fell inlove with not only because of how it sounds but by the history behind it. I also would love to visit Italy one day and be able to interact with the natives and what better way to do that than learning the language.

  20. It has been a goal of mine to study Italian for quite some time. I traveled to Italy in 2004 for my sister's wedding and became fascinated with the language, culture and cities I visited. I enjoyed my time there so much that I returned in 2010 with my best friend and backpacked. While there, I was able to communicate partially with a few words I had memorized from a travel book. I was often corrected when asking for directions, this was my first lesson in Italian and it has stuck with me to try and learn the language.

  21. I have chosen to study Italian this summer due to my interest in the language and the Italian culture. My whole family on my mom's side is Italian but not one of us speak the language at all. I have taken Italian class for three years in high school and I was able to have at least a five minute fluent conversation with my teacher. However, once those three years passed everything I had learned completely left my memory. I am motived to refresh my memory and to learn this wonderful language once more. I would love to be able to have a decent conversation with my great grandmother in her native language! I am also interested in learning another language to make my experience as a nurse more worthwhile. I love to interact with my patients and to truly understand how they are feeling. It would make me very happy to be able to communicate with my Italian speaking patients and to be able to give them exactly what they need.

  22. I naturally have a passion for languages. Haitian Creole is my primary language. I am fluent in French and English and I am proficient in Spanish. I had enjoyed learning Spanish in High School and College. I chose to study Italian this summer because it is very close to Spanish and because I would love to visit Italy soon. I believe that being able to communicate in more than one language makes traveling easier.

  23. I chose to study Italian because I have recently learned about myself that I really like learning different languages. It is something that I find challenging, and I love to challenge myself in different ways. I studied Spanish in high school for 3-4 years and I also studied French for about a year. I am not fluent in either language but because I speak Haitian Creole fluently, I have a better understanding of French. As for Spanish, I understand it a lot more than I can speak it.

I also love to travel. While I don't believe that this course will enable me to speak Italian fluently, it will allow me to get my feet wet, and help me to be familiar with the basics, should I travel to an Italian speaking country.

  24. I have chosen to study Italian mostly to help me with my career. As a business major, I would like to be able to be partially fluent in different languages in order to stand out to the different firms that I may be applying to. I am also fluent in Spanish and have heard there are some similarities between the two languages, which makes me more motivated to learn. Another reason I choose to study Italian is because I love to challenge myself and try new things. My girlfriend is Italian so this will give me the opportunity to be able to engage in an Italian conversation with her family. Eventually I would like to travel to Italy with her and having some knowledge about the language and the Italian culture would be very helpful.
